The Bennington Children's Chorus

The Bennington Children's Chorus was established in 1987 with the purpose of giving children in Vermont's Bennington County and the surrounding areas of New York and Massachusetts the opportunity to study and perform the finest choral literature written for the treble voice.  As part of their classical music education, children are exposed to many styles of choral music, including folk music and newly composed works.

The chorus is committed to providing quality music instruction which develops each singer's vocal ability.  We hope to create an environment in which children can experience the joy of singing, develop confidence and become a vital part of a musical team.  The chorus demonstrates its progress is a variety of performance situations.

The Bennington Children's Chorus has collaborated and performed with the Williams College Chorus, The Sage City Symphony, the Bennington County Choral Society, the Green Mountain Youth Orchestra and other area children's choruses.

The Bennington Children's Chorus is comprised of two ensembles:

Junior Ensemble
Open to the less experienced singer, aged 8 to 12.  (Children as young as 7 may participate at the discretion of the Director). Children with little or no choral experience or private music instruction are placed in this group and acquire skills in singing and music reading before moving up to the Senior Ensemble.  At least two performances are given each year.

Senior Ensemble
Open to the more experienced singer aged 10 to 17.  Emphasis is placed on vocal technique and the repertoire is expanded, including two and three part literature.  Singers in this group also have the opportunity for solo and small group singing.  The Senior Ensemble is the main performing group of the Bennington Children's Chorus and performs regularly throughout the year.

Rehearsals are held Monday afternoons (Juniors 3:45-4:45 and Seniors 4:45-5:45).  The Unitarian Universalist community has generously offered the use of their Meeting House at 108 School Street in Bennington for chorus rehearsals.  The rehearsal space also includes rooms for reading or homework for parents and siblings.
